HDTV BACKGROUND:
What is High Definition Television (HDTV)?
High Definition Television is a digital television format, which combines high-resolution
video and theater-like sound to create a movie theater-quality TV viewing experience. HDTV
represents 6 of 18 digital television formats included in broadcast standard adopted by the
Advanced Television Standards Committee (ATSC) for use in the United States. While the transition
to HD digital television is very new for off-air broadcasters who have traditionally provided
analog broadcasts, HDTV for Satellite TV is simply the addition of another digital television standard
to that already being delivered. Notable characteristics of HDTV are:
Better Picture Quality. An HDTV image contains approximately 5 times as much picture information (picture elements or pixels)
as displayed on a conventional TV.
The net result is an image far superior to those available today.
A wider, movie-theater-like picture. The picture of an HDTV is wider using a 16:9
aspect ratio as opposed to the 4:3 aspect ratio standard we use today. This results in
an image similar to that found in a movie theater.
Better sound quality. The sound format adopted for HDTV is Dolby Digital. CD-quality
movie-theater-level Dolby Digital 5.1 sound can be achieved (when present in the soundtrack).
Available today. Currently, HDTV is available to the consumer via satellite or local broadcast in some markets.
DIRECTV® HD Receiver with HDTV Tuner

In addition, throught its alliances with major consumer electronics manufacturers, DIRECTV has led the industry in introducing HD digital set-top boxes.
HD ON DIRECTV
DIRECTV launched its coast-to-coast high-definition service in October 1998 in retail display rooms. The following year, DIRECN expanded its high-definition programming offering two 24-hour consumer channels, as DIRECTV-enabled HD equipment became available on the market.
In July 2006, DIRECTV launched its first HD package, which includes ESPN HD, Discovery HD Theater'", HDNet and HDNet Movies, and is available by subscription for $10.99 per month. In addition to the HD package, DIRECTV customers with HD-enabled equipment can also receive HBO® HDTV and SHOWTIME HDTV® as part of their premium package subscriptions, as well as high-definition pay per view movies for $4.99 each (when ordered by remote or online). Under terms of its new five-year agreement with the National Football League for exclusive rights to NFL SUNDAY TICKETTM, DIRECTV is also offering select high-definition telecasts of professional football games during the 2006 regular NFL season, as well as other special events broadcast in HD.
HIGH-DEFINITION TV EQUIPMENT
Consumers interested in purchasing high-definition TV viewing equipment with DIRECTV receiving capabilities may purchase an HD-capable DIRECTV set-top receiver for use with a high-definition digital television monitor. A single DIRECTV® Multi-Satellite Dish with three LNBs is needed to receive HD programming available to consumers. With one integrated DIRECTV/ATSC/NTSC set-top receiver, consumers in the 48 contiguous states have access to a complete digital viewing experience including standard digital-quality and high-definition DIRECTV® programming from the DIRECTV 101, 110 and 119 degree West Longitude orbital locations, as well as local digital and analog broadcast channels (via an off-air antenna). A DIRECTV-integrated Receiver- a single set-top box that incorporates both a DIRECTV® Receiver and local digital broadcast receiver-allows customers to continue using their existing analog television, or receive advanced quality high-definition programming on a high-definition television set. The integrated DIRECTV/ATSC/NTSC set-top receivers also give network stations the ability to deliver new digital broadcasts directly to consumers via an off-air antenna - eliminating the platform incompatibility present with most cable systems. DIRECTV HD Receivers that include the Advanced Program GuideTM" feature allow customers to seamlessly tune to all three ATSC, NTSC and DIRECTV channels.

DIRECTV broadcast centers receive television content from entertainment and sports networks in a wide variety of broadcast formats. The broadcast centers "uplink" programming in digital-quality or high-definition format to DIRECTV satellites, where it is then transmitted to DIRECTV® System dishes as digitally compressed signals. The DIRECTV HD Receiver decodes all programming signals, for display in high-quality audio and video on a television monitor.
DIRECTV will accept high-definition programming in a wide variety of industry-standard formats, broadcasting programs in any or all of the ATSC and other industry-standard formats. Programming delivered in high-definition can have up to two million pixels of resolution, resulting in cleaner, crisper, sharper pictures delivered with Dolby° Digital Surround Sound audio. These broadcasts, when combined with high-definition display equipment, create superb picture quality for an unsurpassed home theater experience.
